📋 CASE OVERVIEW

Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares is on trial in Durham County Superior Court, charged with first-degree murder and other charges in the September 2012 death of Faith Hedgepeth, a nineteen-year-old UNC Chapel Hill student who wanted to be a pediatrician. Faith was found in the bedroom she shared with her best friend in an apartment just off the road between Durham and Chapel Hill. For nine years nobody was charged. He was arrested in September 2021, has pleaded not guilty to every charge, and has been held without bond ever since. He is presumed innocent, and the State alone carries the burden of proving otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt.

The State's case on identity is forensic. Prosecutors say his DNA is on the rum bottle they call the weapon, on items across the room, and on a takeout bag carrying a handwritten note, and that his palm print is on a wine bottle at the foot of the bed. They do not forecast an eyewitness, a statement, or a reason he went inside. The defense says DNA can tell a jury whose it probably is, never when or how it got there, and that a 2012 investigation that lost a possible blood swab it never tested left exactly the doubt the State calls "noise." The judge has barred the defense from arguing that anyone else committed the crime, so that fight runs through the quality of the investigation itself.

Opening statements were heard on October 7, 2026, fourteen years and one month after Faith died. We are not here to convict Miguel Salguero-Olivares and we are not here to acquit him. We are here to watch whether a DNA result can carry a murder case on its own, and whether the system, this late, does its job for Faith and for the man it accuses.
